Wat Arun at Night in Bangkok

The vibrant city of Bangkok transforms into a sparkling oasis of lights and sounds as the sun sets on Bangkok. And at the heart of it all sits Wat Arun, the iconic temple known for its stunning architecture and breathtaking views.

Located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) is one of the most visited temples in Bangkok. Its towering spires and intricate details make it stand out among the city’s many temples. But at night, Wat Arun truly shines.

As a warm glow illuminates the temple, the intricate details of its stonework and glazed ceramic mosaics come to life. The spires, decorated with Chinese porcelain, shimmer, sparkle in the light, creating a mesmerizing effect.

A visit to Wat Arun at night is not complete without a climb to the top of the central prang (tower). The steep, narrow steps may be a challenge, but the views from the top are worth it. The entire city is spread out before you, with the Chao Phraya River snaking through the center.

After taking in the views, head down to the river to experience Wat Arun from a different perspective. You can see the temple’s reflection on the water from here, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere.

You can also take a boat ride along the river, allowing you to see Wat Arun from various angles and get a true sense of its grandeur.

As the night wears on, the temple grounds come alive with chanting and traditional music (if you’re lucky!). Visitors can take part in a traditional Buddhist ceremony, offering incense and making offerings to the Buddha. It’s a unique and memorable experience that truly captures the spiritual essence of Wat Arun.

Where to Stay in Bangkok

Bangkok has places to stay for every traveler. The Khaosan area is a backpacker’s paradise for cheap hostels and accommodations. The nightlife here is insanely loud and crowded. The area of Silom offers LGBTQ hostels/hostels and other accommodations. Downtown Sukhumvit is posh but posh, but the noise and traffic can be really discouraging. I didn’t stay in these neighborhoods because I prefer a serviced apartment with a good wifi connection. I stayed at Sitara Place Hotel and Service Apartment, which is 6 minutes walk to the MRT and surrounded by malls, street food stalls, and night markets.
