You have three options in hiking the Bright Angel Trail:

a.) For first time hikers, you can stop or turn around at the Mile and a Half House where you can rest for while and take in as much view as you can. There’s a water fountain and a bathroom here, too. This hike would take about 2.5 – 3 hours, round-trip.

I walked a thousand feet more after the 3-mile rest house, just enough for me to see what Jacob’s Ladder looks like from above. It was already 5 in the afternoon and I had to allow myself for another two hours for the return trip.

c.) You’ve got more time to spare and you really want to see what it’s like down at the plateau? Be ready to experience the steep and winding trails of Jacob’s Ladder. Go down all the way to the Indian Garden where it’s allowed to go camping. That’s another 1.6 miles from the 3-mile resthouse.
