It’s a festival called with two names: Caribana Festival (the old one) and Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival (the new one). For most people, the former is better-sounding than the latter that bears its sponsor’s name.
Caribana, aka Scotiabank Caribbean Festival 2014 is no different from the past: disorganized. The first time and the last time I attended this festival in 2011, I swore I would never do it again. But today, I had no choice but go. A friend is visiting the city and I already planned to bring him to Toronto Island or to Distillery District but he begged—and as good friend, I said yes. Our plan was to stay there for 3 hours but after almost two hours, he was already complaining about its lack of organization and choreography in the parade and competition. There were too many people who were not even part of the parade who mingled and freely roamed in the competition area and the parade route.
Don’t get us wrong, we both love the vibrant colors, the unique Caribbean rhythm, the social vibe and the provocative twerkings and all—but it’s just not a parade we hoped for. These 39 photos will show you the culture, the beauty and the festive mood of the Caribbean nations.
Let’s start our pictionary with the hottest guy we saw today. Well, my friend spotted him and I agreed. LOL…
