After visiting the City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco, I walked a bit up and found this interesting outdoor art installation called, “Language of the Birds.” It is a flock of twenty three sculpted, open books that look like flying birds at a distance. I actually thought like they were electrocuted pigeons. 🙂
Standing below those (book) birds, I noticed that directly under them are words and phrases from literary figures written in English, Chinese and Italian. The words look like they’ve just fallen off from the sky.
The best part of this installation is when the LED lights (attached to the books) are turned on at night. They become illuminated books in flight! Too bad, I wasn’t able to see that because I had an early bus trip to Los Angeles the next morning—and it’s a bit of a walk from my hostel.
The Language of the Birds is collaborative work of artists Brian Goggin and Dorka Keehn.
