Preparing the Ascent and How to Get There

Although climbing Nam Xay Viewpoint takes only 20-30 minutes, it is still important to take precautions. Begin by ensuring you’re in good physical condition, as the ascent can be physically demanding. Pack comfortable and breathable clothing suitable for climbing, along with sturdy climbing shoes that offer a reliable grip on limestone cliffs.

Laos’ tropical climate demands sun protection, so don’t forget to apply sunscreen and wear a hat to shield yourself from the scorching rays. Additionally, bring plenty of water to stay hydrated during the climb.

There are many local tour agents in Vang Vieng. Haggle the price if you can. But the best way to go there is by renting a bike/motorcycle. If you don’t know how to ride/drive, you can also rent a tuk-tuk and make sure to tell him to wait for you. Remember that there are no Grab or car-hailing services there, and it would be difficult to return to the town.

Climbing During the Monsoon Season

My friend and I climbed Nam Xay Viewpoint during the monsoon season (in June 2023). It was raining hard the day before, so the trail was muddy and slippery when we went there. There were times when we had to climb on all fours. Wearing white shoes is not advisable. A few climbers climbed with bare feet. I continued all the way up, but my friend gave up and decided to go back down. It took me 40 minutes to reach the top, and my shoes were soaked in mud and unrecognizable. When I arrived at the summit, it was foggy and rained for a few minutes.

The Views Up There

At the pinnacle of Nam Xay Viewpoint, a breathtaking reward awaits your arrival. As you catch your breath, immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring vistas that unfold before your eyes. Vang Vieng’s landscapes come to life from this vantage point, displaying a symphony of greenery, the gentle meandering of the Nam Song River, and the magnificent limestone formations casting shadows below.

The tranquility of the view from Nam Xay Viewpoint in Vang Vieng is unmatched. Take a moment to cherish the serenity, and let the beauty of nature wash over you. Capture these timeless moments with your camera to preserve the memories of this extraordinary experience. I forgot about the rain when I saw the breathtaking panoramic views before me. It’s a good thing that there’s a makeshift shed up there to protect you from the sun or rain.

And oh, did I tell you that there are two motorbikes up there? It’s also a must that you need to hold the flag and wave it! It’s a tradition! 😍

Where to Stay in Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng has a backpacker’s vibe. There are no Sheraton or Park Hyatt Hotels there for now, but it might change soon. I stayed at Vang Vieng Trendy Hotel. It’s just a fancy name but nothing fancy about it. It’s right along the street but quiet at night after 10 PM. It’s a basic hotel but still cheap for a solo traveler. A few steps from the hotel, you will find Vang Vieng’s popular hostel – Nana Backpackers Hostel. The vibe is good, and they also have a swimming pool.
