Before I Die I Want To…
Fill in the blanks. What would yours be? Out of the many things you have in your bucket list, which one is the most important thing you really want to accomplish before you finally close your eyes for an eternal beauty rest?
… get married?
… win a lottery?
… be published?
… make a difference?
…volunteer somewhere in a third world country?
… be loved?
… see your grandkids?
… be happy?
… be tried for piracy?
… straddle the International Date Line?
… to swim with the sharks?
Before I Die I Want To… is a brilliant public art founded by Candy Chang who turned an abandoned house into a giant chalkboard asking the question you read above. To her surprise, the project was widely accepted by her neighbors and passersby by filling in their answers on the board. Since then, the project has travelled across the world—from Almaty, Kazakhstan to Savannah to Mexico and beyond.
In Toronto, we finally had it a couple of days ago—and last Wednesday, a friend and I went to the corner of Dufferin Street and Queen Street to write our own. And there… we wrote something from our hearts…
“Preparing for death is one of the most empowering things you can do. Thinking about death clarifies your life.” (Candy Chang)
